Best ways to back up your data

“Backing up” your data simply means that keeping them in a safe place in case the copy in your pc or device gets lost or destroyed. That means keeping the important data in a separate memory, like a flash drive, bootable backup or clone, an external backup drive or cloud backup system. Some operating systems have their own built-in options too such as OneDrive for Windows, Time Machine and iCloud for Mac etc.

So what are the best ways of backing up data and which one should you choose? Here’s an overview of your options:

Flash Drives

Technically data can be saved in flash drives, but they are physically small so it is really likely to lose one. Also these memory sticks usually do not have a lot of space so as to back up a lot of data. They are certainly not suited for business data backup, but works well if you want to carry around small amount of personal data that’s important to you.

Bootable backup or clone

This is a complete copy of the primary drive of your pc. If your primary drive dies, you can connect the bootable backup or clone with your computer and immediately access all your files and the software you used. Although bootable backup drives are not great as a permanent solution as they slow down the computer. They come in handy when you have no time to replace your original hard drive and in the middle of working on something important.

External backup drive

External backup drives are not bootable, they create an archive of your changed and deleted files. They are not just a copy of your hard drive at one point of time but creates cumulative backup keeping up with your work. You can back up personal files using this drive. If any file on your primary drive gets deleted or changes you can recover them from this drive.

Cloud backup

Cloud backup is the process of sending a copy of the data to an offsite vendor—a cloud provider that keeps the data secure and accessible. They are the easiest kind to create and maintain compared to all the other options discussed here. Your important business documents, client database, files, presentations, personal data etc. can be backed up using cloud backup system. It simply includes creating and setting up an account on the service provider’s software or server. After that it will automatically keep your pc backed up.
